Freightliner Surge Expansion Tanks

FreightlinerFreightliner, a well-known manufacturer of commercial trucks, started producing semi-trucks in 1942. The company was founded as Freightliner Corporation by Leland James in Salt Lake City, Utah, and began manufacturing trucks for the transportation industry. Over the years, Freightliner has grown to become one of the leading producers of heavy-duty trucks in North America and has expanded its operations globally.

Freightliner semi-trucks typically come equipped with a variety of engine options, depending on the model and specifications chosen by the buyer. Also, Freightliner collaborates with various engine manufacturers to offer a wide range of powertrain options to meet different performance and efficiency requirements.

Freightliner Surge Tanks

The expansion tank, also known as the coolant overflow tank or reservoir or surge tank, in a Freightliner (or any vehicle) serves an essential function in the engine cooling system. Its primary purpose is to provide a space for the coolant to expand and contract as the engine temperature fluctuates during operation.

How a surge/expansion tank works:

Coolant Circulation

The engine coolant, a mixture of water and antifreeze, circulates through the engine and absorbs heat from the combustion process to prevent the engine from overheating.

Temperature Fluctuations

As the engine runs, its temperature fluctuates. When the engine is cold, the coolant contracts, taking up less space. Conversely, as the engine heats up during operation, the coolant expands, needing additional space.

Coolant Expansion

As the coolant expands, it flows into the expansion tank through a pressure relief valve or hose. This prevents excessive pressure buildup in the cooling system, which could lead to coolant leaks or damage.

Cooling System Rebalance

When the engine cools down, the coolant contracts, creating a vacuum in the cooling system. As the coolant level decreases in the main radiator and engine, it is drawn back into the system from the expansion tank, helping maintain the proper coolant level.

Coolant Reserve

The expansion tank also acts as a reservoir or reserve for coolant. If the coolant level in the main radiator drops due to minor leaks or evaporation, the cooling system can draw additional coolant from the expansion tank to maintain a sufficient level.

Freightliner Surge Tanks and More

Overall, the expansion tank plays a crucial role in maintaining a consistent and safe operating temperature for the engine. Regularly checking the coolant level in the expansion tank and ensuring it is at the correct level is essential for the cooling system’s proper function. In addition, it will prevent potential overheating issues in the truck. At SouthPOINTE Radiator we have all the expansion tanks you need to keep your truck running and staying on the road.
